well, if thats the case, the only thing i can think of is maybe your comp is'nt handling it well, does it normally happen with lots of ships onscreen at the same time?

well, then i think thats what your problem is my friend, if it starts bugging you too much just turn of advanced glows and specular highlights, if it still bugs you chuck the screen resolution down to a lower setting
