Torpedo > Phaser/Disruptor
« on: December 01, 2010, 10:57:09 PM »
Am I the only one that seems to think torpedoes are usually overpowered on BC to what we see on the shows, when compared to non-projectile weapons? It always seems like attacks are lead with phasers/disruptors first, and they seem to do a lot more damage than what they *generally* do on BC.

the truth is, the effect of various weapons tended to vary a lot on the shows as the story required.  It's very difficult for a game, in which a weapon must perform exactly the same every time it's fired, to balance to something like that.

Perhaps in the Trek universe, it is similar to STO (And somewhat EVE)

Energy (EM) weapons are more effective against shields than torpedos. (If I lost my shields quickly I'd surrender!) But upon the hull, energy weapons and torpedoes are about equal. This would explain why in the show, phasers are predominant, as they don't need to be replaced and can be remodulated fairly quickly.

BC doesn't and probably can't deal with damage types, and would require significant rebuilding to do so.

Is kinetic energy a large factor in damage?

I'd more say explosive than kinetic. Kinetic is really only good at piercing rather than overall damage.

kinetic energy is released when a projectile hits a surface. a car accident is the pefect example of kinetic energy. the faster the car, the much greater is the energy that is released upon impact. kinetic energy rises exponentially with increasing speeds. 50 km/h is way more dangerous then 45 km/h for example.

True, however a torpedo with no warhead would be nigh-useless against a starship.

unless it was moving at a high speed, penetrated the engineering hull and hit the warp core

Not forgetting it would need to be semi-phased, or have the shield face down. As well as a tip of pure neutronium, narrowing to the mollecular level.  :P

Honestly, I'd rather have dynamite than a javelin to attack a battleship. Anyway, we're getting off-topic, this isnt supposed to be the merits of Kinetic vs Explosive damage. And since I believe I have answered the OP's question; perhaps we shouldn't hijack the thread.

But the great thing about BC is that you can change the yield/power of all weapons to what you think is right  :)  I've spent I think literally hours in MPE balancing my install so that ships and weapons are as canon-matched as possible.   The default is atrocious, lol.

As have I, but it gets even messier when it comes to projectiles.

About the question I raised when I started the thread, when a torpedo strikes a vessel going at whatever km/s does it explode against the outside of the armor or does it burrow into the inside of the hull?

I would assume that just like modern naval shells, torpedoes can be variably fused, meaning that a tactical officer can choose whether to set them for impact detonation, Armor piercing or even airburst mode as needed.
