Monitor Flickering
« on: April 04, 2010, 07:57:23 PM »
I recently decided to install BC onto my new desktop in order to kill some time here or there.  I have a 24inch 1920x1080 monitor and when I run the game in full screen mode it flickers intermittently and is quite annoying.  This issue does not persist in windowed mode, its been a while since I played the game so I am a bit behind on mods that may correct this issue.  My previous machine was a 15 inch laptop with 1280 by 800 screen.

Running Windows 7 64 bit, Intel Core i7, 6GB DDR3 RAM, ATi 4850 512mb, 24inch Samsung monitor.

Laptop was also upgraded to Windows 7 when I played it last and had no issue.

Thanks in advance.

Right click the desktop icon then go to properties. On the compatbility tab make sure the three "disable" options are checked.

I always thought it was a gfx glich from the drivers.... usually when this happens and I update the drivers it fixes itself.

Or when you have background programs running which BC doesn't like. I.E. Running Winamp in the background.

My graphics drivers are up to date (perhaps too up to date?), no background programs.  What is interesting is if I order it to change the reservation it will cease flickering while it adjusts.

Yeah, trying different driver version shouldn't hurt anything.

Have you tried playing with different driver settings, i.e. increasing AA/AF levels, mipmap levels.

Try setting the catalyst levels to Balanced preset, and try to play the game.

Been playing around with driver settings and have been unable to find a solution.  The flickering improves when ATI AAA (Adaptive AA) is set to quality but when AI is disabled its worse, but when enabled and at performance stabilizes, but breaks down again at quality setting.  AA and AF seem to have minimal effect.  I think it lies in Mipmaps, that setting in BC and on the drivers seem to have the greatest effect.  This is very frustrating.

Yes to the previous replies, balanced predefined settings is actually when it is worst.

Interesting, truly interesting.

Which color depth? Low or High.

Try switching that.

When it is not on the T&L option it is worse.  Low color depth is also worse than high color depth.

I have Kaspersky AV running at most (along with ATI catalyst control center).  I keep any open programs to a minimum.

To Neb, I did delete options.cfg, it just made it take longer to load the first time.
