I think I've seen the light.
« on: June 11, 2009, 06:53:44 PM »
I got sick of the continuous, high risk of getting BSOD, so I downloaded Kobayashi Maru 1.0. after installing it and fiddling with settings, I started up the game with bit of a warm up, Excalibur versus couple Hutets. After making mince meat of them, I decided to take a look around. First I went to Arcturus, just to see if it's as big as people claim. Well, I was thoroughly impressed by it.  8)  then, I went to earth, and got all giddy when I pointed out countries, which earned a couple funny looks from the fellow officers.  :?  But then..

I gave order to go to Wolf 359. and let's just say that the ship didn't enter warp until I pointed a phaser towards Saffi. after that, everything seemed to go fine.. until I realized that the trip went on and on. Obviously my computer has coward for an AI, and it froze from terror just thinking about meeting those biomechanical lawyers. thus, it just gave me the typical "STBC has encountered an error"-excuse and dropped me back to desktop.. :arms:

It seems that my poor old computer isn't able to handle awesomeness called Kobayashi Maru. Thus, I've decided to start building a new, better rig to replace this ancient (2004) , noisy SOB. Sadly, I know nothing of computers, but luckily I have a geeky-ish friend who has plenty of experience and who will build and order the parts. After getting addicted just from 10 minutes of KM, I need more, and since my current computer isn't able to deal with it ( I suspect that 512Mb of RAM isn't quite sufficient, not to mention my poor X850 128Mb Graphics card and asthmatic 2.08Ghz CPU..), new rig will be built soonish. I hope.  :P  until then I have to avoid the more detailed maps.. :(  Yes, I'm hooked for good. Well, it could be worse, it could be WoW...  :P :lol:

Actually, it might not be your PC lol
If I remember correctly, Wolf 359 system (in KM1, dunno about the actual mod download) had a scripting error, one which made NanoFXv2 "WarpFX" bug out when trying to warp to it (that's why you never reached it), and after some time of an endless travel, it crashed the game.

Really? A bug you say.. hmm.. I still need to rebuild my rig, the OS has never been reinstalled, thus, it's quite rotten.  :v: in addition, the FPS-rate is pretty horrid. :( I've been planning this for a long time, and now I finally have a good reason. atleast I will be able to play bit more modern games without turning the graphics and everything to the minimum.. Even CFS3 gives problems to my computer, as well as Battle For Middle Earth.

yeah. it's probably the lack of RAM.... oh well, I'll build the new rig slowly but certainly..

Or while your new rig isn't complete, you could try my idea :P

You know, I would go with the severe-shameless-advertising and tell you to use Galaxy Charts, since it won't crash your game if a problem like this happens, and it would tell us which problem happened. But since I'm in a good mood, I've already runned a few checks for you:

From GC's player travel log, more precisely when trying to warp to Wolf 359:
Quote
< ------------------------------------------- >
<----------------- EXCEPTION ----------------->
-----> ERROR at SetDestination
Traceback of Error: NameError: pHulk12
Script: ".\Scripts\Custom\GalaxyCharts\Traveler.py", Line 1317, in the function "SetDestination".
Script: ".\Scripts\Systems\Wolf359\Wolf3591.py", Line 28, in the function "Initialize".
Script: ".\Scripts\Systems\Wolf359\Wolf3591_S.py", Line 45, in the function "Initialize".
<--------------- END EXCEPTION --------------->
< ------------------------------------------- >

And from the Wolf3591_S.py script, lines 31 to 45:
Code: [Select]
        pHulk1 = loadspacehelper.CreateShip("Ambassador", pSet, "Saratoga", "wreck1")
        pHulk2 = loadspacehelper.CreateShip("Nebula", pSet, "Kyushu", "wreck2")
        pHulk3 = loadspacehelper.CreateShip("Akira", pSet, "Gage", "wreck3")
        pHulk4 = loadspacehelper.CreateShip("Galaxy", pSet, "Buran", "wreck4")
        pHulk5 = loadspacehelper.CreateShip("Ambassador", pSet, "Yamaguchi", "wreck5")
        pHulk6 = loadspacehelper.CreateShip("Ambassador", pSet, "Bonestell", "wreck6")
        pHulk7 = loadspacehelper.CreateShip("Nebula", pSet, "Golden Apple", "wreck7")
        pHulk8 = loadspacehelper.CreateShip("Akira", pSet, "FireBrand", "wreck8")
        pHulk9 = loadspacehelper.CreateShip("Nebula", pSet, "Chekov", "wreck9")
        pHulk10 = loadspacehelper.CreateShip("Galaxy", pSet, "Melbourne", "wreck10")
        pHulk11 = loadspacehelper.CreateShip("Nebula", pSet, "Bellerophon", "wreck11")
        #pHulk12 = loadspacehelper.CreateShip("Akira", pSet, "Princeton", "wreck12")
        pHulk13 = loadspacehelper.CreateShip("Ambassador", pSet, "Tolstoy", "wreck13")

        DamageWrecks(pHulk1, pHulk2, pHulk3, pHulk4, pHulk5, pHulk6, pHulk7, pHulk8, pHulk9, pHulk10, pHulk11, pHulk12, pHulk13)

Contemplate those 2 blocks of text for some time and even someone which doesn't understand a thing about python will get the awnser :P
But just to make it clear: Dunno why whoever wrote (or modified in KM1) that script took out ship hulk #12, but when doing so he forgot that the function call to DamageWrecks actually requires it to be there...

Anyway, to fix it, before that "DamageWrecks( ... )" line, put this one:
Code: [Select]
        pHulk12 = NoneDunno if the indentation of the code I posted here will be correct (meaning you might have to come back here about this issue), but that is the way to fix it.

 :shock: umm.. yeah, what you said..  :lol:  uh.. I'll.. try that at some point >.>; this far I've done just fine without touching a single piece of coding, since it just doesn't make any sense to me, and I usually mess up in a big way. :hide

I don't even know where to look at for that piece of code, or what do I need to change it  :arms:

<BC Folder>\scripts\Systems\Wolf359\Wolf3591_S.py;  line 45, which is the last line of the code block I posted.
You can open the script (.py) with any text editor like Wordpad or Notepad, and do what I said to do.

Or... you can just get the file already modified and tested which I attached here, and put it in that folder, overwriting the old one :P

Thank you. I'm not a pro modder by any means, just a raw amateur.. although, I'm wobbling my way through the incoherent tools of Gmax in order to make my first ship. :P tutorials are good, but none of them usually explains what the particular tool does.  :?

Let's see.. this will be the sixth reinstall of BC+KM.  :P I have to continue compiling the list of ships that don't work with KM.. :arms: Oh well.. I'm also considering writing a sort of novel or fanfiction, and possibly use some screencaps in it..

I have to continue compiling the list of ships that don't work with KM..
There shouldn't be one single ship that is incompatible. In fact, I think with enough editing of ship scripts, you could potentially have every ship ever made for BC installed and working.

the thing is that I lack such knowledge completely.. and I seriously lack the patience to learn scripting, and since I usually install 2 or more ships at the same time, I never can tell which of them causes the BSOD.  Most of the added ships are missing descriptions anyway, and some of them don't show up in the tactical displays during the game.. oh well, it's too much to ask for perfection, we're not Borgs.. yet. :P :lol:

I get thos error from time to time also, usually get it after I do 2 or 3 quick battles or try to switch from quick battle to something else, usually it happens near the end of the third battle, which kinda sucks when I'm about to win

okay, this is the plan for the computer this far..

Sapphire Radeon HD4890 PCI-E
6Gb 1333Mhz DDR3 RAM
Intel Core 2Duo E8400 3000Mhz
Samsung Spinpoint F1 1Tb, ATA II

I haven't decided yet which tower I shall get, nor the power source.. and there's some other things to tink of too.

Okay, any opinions?
