i would model everything out, then render it onto a plane as a texture to create the illusion, but that would only work on one angle and look funky from others. but DJ would be the one to ask.

So I have modeled them in, I like em, in this state though it adds a huge amount of polies because of the cage and keeping it meshed. When finished this model may end up being 30k Triangles at this rate......  

I'll throw my hand down as always and show you the cards, its a 100% perfect mesh wise 30k, and i reckon 2 x 2048 maps to boot.  :eek

How does that sit with the machines of 2011??

Agreed, I would say it would shave off 20+k polies...which would be great for my old stupid compy!!!

Definitely be hard on the older machines, but my god, what awesome detail!  :drool:

If it isn't possible to get the grating  to look that good with a plane, I would try to get it down on other parts of the ship that would not be as noticeable if possible. Just looks too good man. Have a well deserved cookie.

I was thinking about that last night, I will have a rebuild tonight and try it with a plane, and once modeled in share the new expected count.
