Ship sizes in Trek have always been a bit ambiguous (at least before Voyager) and Trek enthusiasts have had to make due with using side-by-side comparisons and angular shots from the shows to extrapolate dimensions.  Since the advent of good CG, this has become less of an issue (JJ Trek aside :P).  However, the ship that gets the most attention for its size is the Defiant class.  There are estimates that range from 120m to just over 200.  That's a fair gap even for TrekLore which is positively fuzzy on dimensions, anyway.

I propose that as Trek fans (and hardcore ones, at that :yay:) WE come up with the dimensions that we wish it to be.  After all, the old Trek canon has become obsolete, to an extent.  So we can come up with any number we wish the Defiant to be, and hold it at that.  I believe that since Trek canon is now going out the window (thanks to JJ), fans of the original timeline of Trek can stipulate the terms of what was and continue the original vein of the series as we see fit.

As it stands, the dimensions of the Defiant can have been put forth as:

120.5026 meters
170.8068 meters
200.0000 meters

These are what Saquist has extrapolated, and he has done (by far) the most intense study of the Defiant that I have yet seen.

Mark, I don't mean to hijack your thread, but I would consider this a perfect time to have a real debate on the dimensions of the class and have a concise and concrete decision on the subject.  Perhaps this could be carried over to the Saquist thread for the purposes of cohesiveness.  I'm not looking for arguments on the subject, just a plain basic vote.

I always thought the ship was around 180?

Thanks fellas. I am not too fussed about the scale and stuff to be honest, I am just eyeballing it and doing the best re creation I can without going OTT on poly count.

The Runabout mate I still have, just need to texture the underside and she is finished.

No offence to you MarkyD, it's a beautiful ship. All these people are saying we need a new Defiant, but I thought Lint's Defiant was fairly new, and very high detail.

Or am I completely out of the loop again?

EDIT: Wow, really? Lint's Defiant was released in 2008? To be honest it doesn't seem very dated to me... Maybe we could use a new one afterall.

Hmmm,,,, Runabout, Defiant, you wouldn't be heading toward a certain old Cardassian station I know of for your next project?  :D

Would make a nice DS9 Pack.

Though much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
 Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;

Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Double Post

Jimmy can tell me off later  :bitch:         lol

Anyway I have a question, The Rear nacelles of the defiant are actually a hollow structure, and that honey comb meshing is at the front of it..

See the engines.jpg (attached)

Most models just texture this, now I want the structure to have that hollow feel, so I have 2 options: an alpha map for the honey comb grid or model it.  I take it alpha transparencies are out of the question??

021310061976's defiant has modeled engines and I definitely think it looks 100% better than just textured engines ;)

I got to agree it would be nice to see it modeled
"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee."

i second that notion, model them out, but that meshing would be a nightmare to do, when i did the side cover mesh on my chopper model, it chugged the HELL out of my poor lil pc:
(but it was a high poly model to begin with, that just added fuel to the fire)

I came, i saw, i added a Sig.
Later gents, i have Youtube to take over.

Take a look at Lint's Defiant model, it did something like that.

Thanks fellas, ur input is appreciated

A modeled honeycomb feature with depth like that will impact heavily on the poly count  but if transparencies are out of the question and no one has found a way to make them work on the BCC engine, then I will go with that.

I agree it is worth it

I think with transparencies, the glows do not "glow" out of them, so modelling is probably your best bet ;)
