How Do I Get On-Line...?
« on: January 14, 2009, 09:28:26 AM »
Hello everyone.

I am completely new to Bridge Commander (played for one week now solo)

This might sound stupid, but I can't get into an on-line game.

I can "query" and see games and player lists just fine.

I see that I must enter three fields (username, password and "direct join" field)

When I try to connect I there is a pause, then a dis-connect (something about "wrong autoexe")

Do I have to register a username and password at GameSpot...?
Also, the manual says I need to enter an actual IP somewhere...?

Simple instructions would be appreciated since I am not very computer-literate.

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.
I look forward to joining you in battle.

First: GET RID OF GAMESPY!!!111ONEONE. Its technically Spamware which you do not need to get online in Bridge Commander.

Welcome to BCC Winston.

Most of those servers you are seeing are more then likely using a mod called KM1.0

It is a multiplayer only mod that is meant to make the experience that much better. The problem with Bridge Commander is to join another persons game, you need to have the exact same files as them (poor programming on Totally Games! part). If you don't, you'll get alot of file mismatch errors.

http://files.filefront.com/Kobayashi+Maru+10+Full/;8195890;/fileinfo.html

Personally, I don't have KM1.0 installed for the following reasons:
1. Its lacking a few mods which in my opinion are better then the ones included and they were released before KM1.0
2. There are alot of jerks online in multiplayer. I got sick of everyone in Sovereigns ganging up on me when I refused to conform to a popular ship (klingons 4 lief muthaf**as WOOT!)

But you might find it more enjoyable. As always, please post here if you get any problems and people will be more then happy to help if they are able.

Set phasers to ownage!

Games that use KM have KM1.0 (or 0.9) in their name, if they use extra mods then they should include them in the name.

Also, it's not "sloppy" programming by TG, yes, MP is a mess due to time constraints and changing requirements, but the file mismatch is entirely intentional and keeps you save from cheaters and other problems.
I still can't read peoples minds, nor can I read peoples computers, even worse, I can't combine the two to read what is going wrong with your BC install...

ok, thanks for those replies, however...

What do I type into the 3 log-in fields (username and password and "directlink")..?
Is the password used so that I can play on MY computer (no-one else can log-in without password)...?
Or is the password recognized by the on-line servers (it must match somewhere else...?)

I couldn't find that GameSpy file to delete, sorry (the spamware)

So, if I download the above posted KM link into my Bridge folder, I will be able to join any game which says it is using that KM type of gamefile?

Thanks in advance, as always

The username is the nickname that will show up ingame.
The password is for password protected servers.
The Direct Link is to directly connect a server.

You won't necessarily be able to join all servers, but any unmodified KM 1.0 servers. Those can be identified by "KM1.0" as a prefix. There will likely also be "KM0.9" or "1.1", but you won't be able to join those.

Okay. I apologise for the jive agaisnt TG!

Atleast admit though that GameSpy is a piece of dog turd which should have been shut down long ago.

Never installed it, so I can't say anything about it.

ok, I downloaded the KM file... 1.0, as suggested. Thanks for that link.

Two quick questions...

The download is a folder containing sub-folders and a .dll (I think...)
Do I just copy/paste the KM folder into my Bridge folder...?
Or, do I copy paste the contents of the KM folder individually into my Bridge folder?
Also, will these new KM files automatically replace ones in the original Bridge folder?

Another stupid question...
Will this KM data affect the way my Bridge game plays solo (off-line)...?
Because I like the way the game plays on my computer now, solo-wise.

I would like to know these things before I attempt to over-write my game files.
Any answers would be appreciated.

well KM was built for MP and QB the single player campaign is busted if you use the mods in KM 1.0

It's best if you create another BC folder so you have a modded install and an Unmodded install.

To install KM 1.0 just take all the folders under the KM folder and C&P into the main BC folder
*when it asks if you want to overwrite the folder/files say yes*

Ok, followed your advice, made a second game folder for the KM install.
I have successfully joined three games but...

I must have chosen a ship which was not allowed (Sovereign) and was disconnected all three times.

I need to know 2 things please.

1/ How do I know which ship I am supposed to use before I join a game?
2/ How do I type into the chat screen (to let players know I am new)...?

Also, is there any way to join a game as an "observer" (so I can check out the different ships without having to worry about defending)...?
The KM has many ships which aren't in my original game and I don't know their systems yet.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to, well, watching you kill me (at first...)
hehehehe

Well, I got the chat working (config setup showed me the } key)

I fought for about 10 minutes and had one kill in a free-for-all.

Then, I was killed so I came back with another ship, to continue fighting, but I was disconnected and then it said I was banned from the server.
Is this because I was wrong to return and attack again?
Is it only one death and I must find another game?

And if that's true, then I apologize to those who saw me return in that game.

Are there any general "server rules" like One Death Only?
I will follow them, but the box I see before joining which descibes the "game type" doesn't really explain much other than ship and team things.

Thanks for that invite Kirk... I will log-in 9th today.

Fought for 5 hours now, trying out ships that aren't in my solo game.
I enjoy learning the BorgSphere, but I was quite unpopular in the free-for-all server for trying to use it (there's no other way to learn the strange weapon systems)

I need to spend time and learn the most effective ways to switch targets (set-up not comfortable yet for my style of play, key layout needs tweaking)

Thanks you for your help in getting me on-line in only one day.
I think I will enjoy Bridge Commander.
I will still use the Sphere occassionally, but I will spread attacks over all ships (firing only once in a while, when I can get torpedo locks, very hard to do at this point...)

I hope to see you all in battle.
